Fabric Savvy: The Essential Guide for Every Sewer
This book lists recommended needles and feet, stitch length and thread, preshrinking and cleaning information, and fantastic sewing tips for almost every type of fabric you would use for making clothing. I just bought it this weekend and (having a sewing spree) I consulted it’s pages many times. “Must have” for the beginning sewer.

Readers Digest: New Complete Guide to Sewing
I have read that the previous editions of this book are far superior to the recent version, however, this is a fantastic reference book nonetheless. The illustrations are very easy to understand as a step-by-step guide to attaching a zipper, altering a pattern, attaching collars, etc. Though if you can get a copy of earlier versions, you might try, this is the best reference when compared to the “others” that are available today.

Does anyone have any other tried-and-true sewing reference books they would recommend?

What’s wrong with the new edition of Reader’s Digest? I flipped through it a little and kind of liked the project-oriented sections. Is there something I’m missing?

A great place to buy books is online at Hamilton Books:

The selection is limited, but the prices are wonderful.

title: A Guide to Fashion Sewing -by Connie Amaden-Crawford. I know Connie, and have modeled for her at a couple of sewing expos. The book is textbook-style, but she really GETS fit. Her patterns ( she only does plus-size now) are amazing- they fit in neck and shoulder AND at the hip!
Anything by Sandra Betzina, also Gale Grigg-Hazen or Pati Palmer for fitting help. And Threads magazine- the July issue has a neat way of dealing with bias layouts. I love Threads.

I think it’s a really great book but a few reviews I read said that the older editions had more information on sewing for men and children and tayloring. I personally haven’t seen one of the older versions.

Like you, I have been surfing the web recently looking for sewing resources (my 14 yodd has a very curvy figure and it’s getting very difficult to find ready-to-wear clothing that fits her, so I think it’s time to teach her how to sew and get back into it myself). I saw your request and thought I’d share a site I found the other day. It’s a wonderful list of sewing books by category along with the owner’s comments. I don’t know the site owner, but she seems to know her subject pretty well.

    Happy stitching!
