Dad's Aran from Knitting the New Classics

Christmas 2003 Project One: Dad’s Aran

Yeah! This is my dad’s sweater, full of cables and cables and cables and, did I mention the cables? This was probably the most fun of all my Christmas projects. It’s made of Gedifra Shetland, a mix of wool and alpaca, so it’s very soft and the cables make the fabric spongy and extra warm. This sweater accompanied me on weekends at the beach, up the hill in San Francisco on a cable car, on multiple airplanes and was my constant lunch companion for all of October. I thought it was going to be hard to give up until I saw my dad wearing it - it was like he’d always had it on.

Dad had cautioned me before that he wasn’t a “sweater wearing kind of a guy” because they made him feel too dressy. This one, though, is a very rugged sweater that he can roll around in the dirt with and no one will be able to tell! I think that sealed the deal.

Of all the sweaters I’ve made so far, I enjoyed this on the most. It’s made of a shetland wool/mohair blend and with the cables, it’s very soft and squishy. It was for my dad for Christmas in 2002. He’s worn the hell out of it - which is fabulous.
