I bought a yarn room - and there’s a house around it too!

house_100.jpgThings have been pretty quiet on the knitting front lately as Bob and I have been immersed in the joys of house hunting, buying, and fixing up. A 3 month process. And in 1 week, we’ll finally get to move in.

Years of living in the rental have instilled in me a loathing of the white wall. Thus, I’ve spent countless hours perusing the paint chip aisle at Home Depot and endured many conversations with Bob arguing that beige is just another, darker, version of white. Through it all, I believe I’m coming to the unfortunate conclusion that I have a radical color sense, an eye for contrast and a blind eye for soothing blends. And I want the soothing blends. So I’ve just ordered “Annie Sloan’s Color Schemes: For Every Room” to help me see the light, and the paint that reflects it. I’ll let you know how it goes. In the mean time, this is the planned color of my Kitchen.

The best part about the house is the yarn/sewing/inspiration gathering room I’m setting up on the second floor. Yarn store-like cubes of stash will line the walls and my sewing machine will have a permanent home next to the window. Pictures to come when it’s a reality…

I love your kitchen color choice. Oh and here’s something to enable you with more color. After my house flooded from Tropical storm Alison I painted my bedroon 2 colors. Beige on 2 walls and deep aqua on 2 walls. The ceiling is aqua. I love the room but the ceiling needed to be beige.

HGTV home decor shows help. I see two color rooms all the time. He think about it. LOL

P.S. I have a yarn room too !! Ain’t it great!!! I chose to paint it a warm beige cause it is on the dark side of the house with very little natural light.

Our PC/ exercise room is sunny yellow and it is on the sunny south side of the house.

Your first home! How exciting! I’ve spent many an hour pouring over paint chips. Just go with your gut. You can always paint over . . . :) (One helpful piece of advice? Buy lots of poster board and paint ‘em. Put them in the room you plan to paint and live with them for a few days. You’ll be amazed at how the light in each room can affect the color.)

Congratulations on your new yarn room! With the added plus of a house, too :-)

    hey jamie,
congrats on the house! i’ve only been in my new place for about a month and it’s a lot of work, but i’m happy. where’s your new place located? maybe i’ll see you at SnB sometime soon!

Yarn Room???? I thought it was going to be an old car parts cleaning room! I think you just got confused, honey.

  7. Shetha Says:

Congratulations Jamie!!! I feel so out of touch hehe. Tell Bob that the parts cleaning will require a permit for VOCs. (that’s not really true — but it’s a good excuse!) My dh’s parts cleaning facility is in the GARAGE!!! My yarn/sewing/inspiration room is going to be in my basement and still hasn’t been built. I should follow my SIL’s lead and build some cubbys for my yarn and fabric… maybe I would get organized then! (not likely haha!)

Hey Shetha/Melissa, I’ve missed you! And getting together to KIP in general. I’m so happy that the SnB book has the Portland group buzzing again. Let’s start up a weekly sunday morning meeting in SE/NE? I just want to find a place with several sofas.

Hi, I haven’t been here in a LONG while! Wow! You have a house now!!! Would love to see the pics of Kitchen when you are done. My kitchen is on the north/northwest side of the house and is the DARKEST room in the house. Well, one day my daughter and I were driving and there were some beautiful creamy butter yellow wooden window shutters put out for TRASH. Needless to say they came back to my house but never found a use for them, EXCEPT…. I brought them to the paint store for a custom color match, and voila!, My kitchen is so warm and inviting even on the coldest gloomiest day. :)

    Jamie, congrats!

Your house, sorry home, looks terrific! and a room all of your own as well….wonderful!

I have a spare room that, at the moment is full of fabric and “stuff”. Hopefully soon it’ll be a haven for all my sewing and knitting goodies as well as me….oh to have a room where the sewing machine and overlocker don’t have to be put away at the end of each day!

Good luck with your hunt for the perfect wall colours for your home. It’s a difficult job trying to find the colour that you’ll be able to live with for the next few years. Still, the hunt is pleasurable and when you get it right it’s extremely satisfying
    ENJOY!
