Christmas 2003 Project One: Dad’s Aran

Yeah! This is my dad’s sweater, full of cables and cables and cables and, did I mention the cables? This was probably the most fun of all my Christmas projects. It’s made of Gedifra Shetland, a mix of wool and alpaca, so it’s very soft and the cables make the fabric spongy and extra warm. This sweater accompanied me on weekends at the beach, up the hill in San Francisco on a cable car, on multiple airplanes and was my constant lunch companion for all of October. I thought it was going to be hard to give up until I saw my dad wearing it - it was like he’d always had it on.

Dad had cautioned me before that he wasn’t a “sweater wearing kind of a guy” because they made him feel too dressy. This one, though, is a very rugged sweater that he can roll around in the dirt with and no one will be able to tell! I think that sealed the deal.

That sweater is so great, you did such a good job. I’m working on my first cabled sweater and you have inspired me that it’s not going to be a mangled mess of mismeasurements and such.

Gosh, it looks like it was made for him! (Oh har har, I guess it was!) I had never thought about this phrase before! I’m inspired– Did you guess on measurements, or did you do some stealth work?
